Your written plan will include the day, time of day and your food/drink choices for each snack  (recipies are not necessary to include). Pay attention to the details when you make your food/drink choices to ensure that they are inclusive. The 4 offerings must take place at different times/days (e.g.mid AM, mid PM, varying days). Note: You as the ECE Candidate are not required to purchase/supply any food/drink. This means that you will need to bring your awareness to the products that are already on hand at the early learning site, receive permission from your Mentor to use the products, and also ensure that your plans will not interfere with the use of products that are planned/needed by educators on other days.

Next, present and discuss your written plan with the Mentor for feedback and (if permitted under their current site practices) the Mentor’s approval prior to implementation of your plan. After this discussion, consider the Mentor’s feedback and make any necessary adjustments to your plan before assignment submission (or implementation if permitted).

If you are permitted by the site, once the plan has been approved by the Mentor and any necessary adjustments have been made, offer the snack/drinks from the plan, to the children. While participating in the snack time, also be sure to observe and jot down key notes.

After each snack offering, (or if not permitted to implement your plan – then, prior to assignment submission)

Based on the plan I made and the feedback, observations, write an assessment of how you believe the snack was (or would be) received by the children and note in what ways the snacks supported or enriched (or could) the relationships between the people involved. If plan was implemented, Include examples from your observation notes of the children’s/educators comments, and/or any observed conversations/behaviours that would serve to support your statements about how the relationships were impacted. 

Each of the 3 plans will include: the specific snack/drinks offered (with supporting researched rationale behind your decisions), key feedback received from the Mentor at the planning stage, your assessment of how the snacks were received (or anticipated to be received) by the children, and your comments on the ways relationships were impacted.

First one,

Oct 11, 2023 afternoon snack

Octopus sausage, that I cut the chicken sausage into half and make three cuts on the other half again but not break it to make the octopus’s tentacles. Then we put the sausages in the oven to bake a little bit, the place we cut will curl up and it looks like a octopus shape.

Me and my mentor have decided to choose chicken sausage instead of the original pork or beef, it’s just better to let as much as them to try it and chicken is always a safer option. When they were sitting around the table and watched me cut the sausage, they don’t feel like that’s an octopus shape, after we took it out from the oven, children were surprised how the bottom of the sausage curled and looks like the tentacles. I was saying “legs” at the beginning, and it was the children who corrected me those are tentacles. I learned from this too.

When we started to serve the sausage, children were really happy about it. I’m surprised how creative they are, I think making a octopus shape sausage is already creative, but since we are grown up, so we use fork to eat food, but children sometimes use their hands, so they were holding the sausage and squeezing it, then all the tentacles were really stretching while they squeeze it. They were having fun with it.

While showing them the process and I also acknowledged them the safety instructions of using knives and children can only use knives with their parents.

Second one,

Oct 6, 2023 morning after circle time

Orange flavour Jello

We had potluck on the Friday. We made jelly together, because it takes time to solidify the jelly, so we have decided to make it in the morning. I have prepared one cup of hot water, one cup of ice water and the jelly powder. Hot water could be a safety issue for children. I have done a little activity with them before we make the jello. Children were sitting in a circle and closed their eyes, I put the Kelly powder in a big bowl and let them smell it, some of them said orange and some of them said lemon, but by just looking at the powder colour, it’s a little bit pinkish, they were guessing is strawberry flavour. I have walked around the school and see the pictures on the board, they love to explore and play the guessing game by smell or touch. After this, I added the hot water into the bowl, then the colour has changed to orange. They were really happy and surprised when they saw it. Then, I invited a child to add the other cup of cold water into the bowl and the second child helped with stirring. All of them enjoyed so much and excited for the jelly to be ready in the afternoon.

Third one,

Oct 13, 2023 afternoon snack

Ants on the Log, my mentor has told me this snack, she said she have done it million times with children in the previous class, but this class haven’t tried it yet. Kids loves it so much. I have prepared a bag of raisins, some celery brunch, and wow butter, which is a substitute for peanut butter, it’s safe for school.

Children from our class always picked so many leaves and make homes for ant. I think this can be a really good idea that we can have this snack together and children can play with it.

My mentor and I showed them how to make the snack. I spread the butter on all the celeries, then I put all the raisins on the plate, so kids can pick their own log and ants, it’s taste not bad actually. One of them has come 4 times and ask for more. I think this is a great opportunity to play and build relationship with them. Children needs to explore and learn new things all the time, they are always curious, as an educator, we can always help them, acknowledge them and direct them in the fun and correct way.
